Especially the Historical Peninsula, which has been used as the center of Istanbul for centuries, contains structures that will attract the attention of those who want to have information about the city’s past. Hagia Sophia Museum (Turkish: Ayasofya Müzesi) awaits its visitors with its artistic and architecturally unique treasures hidden under its magnificent dome.
Hagia Sophia Museum (Mosque)
It was re-used as a mosque with the desicion of the Turkish Government.
It referred to as the eighth wonder of the World, whose name means “Holy Wisdom” in English, gained its current form when it was built for the 3rd time between 532-537 by order of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I.
Many holy relics such as the Silver Iconostasist, 15 meters high, were influential in the reputation of the building, which was called Megale Ekklesia (Great Church) at that time.
Another factor that makes the religious structure, which thought to build on the Temple of Artemis magnificent, is its survival for more than 15 centuries despite the earthquake and fire disasters it has experienced.
The Hagia Sophia church, which was destroyed many times with fire and earthquake disasters in the past. It was named as the biggest cathedral in the world for 1,000 years after its third construction.
Islamic elements added to the religious structure, which is of great importance for Eastern Orthodox and Catholic sects, in 1453, after the city conquered by the Ottomans under the leadership of Mehmed The Conqueror.
Particularly, the works of Mimar Sinan played a major role in restoring the former glory of the building, which was devastated during the Latin Invasion.
The conversion of it into a museum was carried out between 1930 and 1935 at the request of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
Most of the floor coverings and wall mosaics that are appreciated by the visitors have been brought to light as a result of the restoration works carried out in this period.
